DS2 does a really good job sprinkling weapons throughout the early game to cater to a wide variety of builds. On a quality build, the Bastard Sword, Claymore, Estoc, Broadsword etc are all great. Halberds too IIRC. Strength has a ton of viable weapons. Craftsman's hammer, mace, greatsword, etc. Balder Side Sword is pretty much the king of longswords. Battle-Axe is probably the best low stat smacker. Rapier can drill a single opponent really fast. Zweihander is a good light weight ultra greatsword.
